Tips
This two-day expedition takes you deep into the remote landscapes of the Aral Sea region — one of the most fascinating and dramatic places in Central Asia. Starting from Nukus, the journey leads through the former port town of Muynak, once a thriving fishing hub that now stands as a powerful reminder of the Aral Sea’s disappearance. Travel across the vast desert plains and the breathtaking cliffs of the Ustyurt Plateau, where endless horizons and surreal landscapes create unforgettable views. Along the way you will explore the famous ship cemetery in Muynak, visit the Aral Sea shoreline, and experience the quiet beauty of the surrounding desert. In the evening you will reach the remote coast of the Aral Sea, where you can watch a spectacular sunset over the water and spend the night in a traditional yurt camp under a sky full of stars. The next morning begins with sunrise over the sea before returning to Nukus, completing a journey that combines nature, history, and adventure in one unforgettable experience.
Meeting with the guide and starting the journey through the history of Karakalpakstan.
Mizdakhan Necropolis. One of the most mysterious and spiritually significant sites in Karakalpakstan, Mizdakhan is a vast ancient necropolis that has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. Spread across gentle hills, the complex contains numerous mausoleums, tombs, and sacred monuments from different historical periods.According to local legends, Mizdakhan is linked to ancient prophecies about the end of the world, which has made it an important spiritual destination for generations. Walking among the weathered monuments, visitors experience a unique atmosphere where history, mythology, and desert landscapes come together.
Gyaur Qala Fortress. Located near Mizdakhan, Gyaur Qala is the remains of an ancient fortress that once guarded important trade routes across the region. The name translates roughly as “Fortress of the Infidels”, reflecting the complex history of cultures and religions that passed through this land. Believed to be more than two thousand years old, the fortress once served as a strategic settlement along early Silk Road routes. Today only fragments of its walls remain, yet they still reveal the scale of this once-powerful stronghold and offer a glimpse into the lives of ancient traders and travelers.
The cafe offers simple and tasty local dishes in a calm and comfortable atmosphere. It is a nice opportunity to relax, share impressions from the day, and experience the warm hospitality of the town. After dinner, the vehicle is changed to a 4×4 off-road vehicle, specially suited for the desert terrain. The journey continues across the vast landscapes of the former Aral Sea seabed toward the remote Aral Sea region.
The Ustyurt Plateau is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the region. Towering cliffs and endless desert horizons create breathtaking panoramic views. The driver will stop at the best viewpoints where guests can take unforgettable photos.
During the journey across the desert, guests will visit Kurgancha Kala, another ancient fortress hidden in the vast landscapes of Karakalpakstan. Although partially ruined today, it reflects the strategic importance of this region along historic trade routes.
By evening, guests arrive at a traditional yurt camp near the Aral Sea. Here travelers can rest after the long journey, enjoy the peaceful desert atmosphere, and experience traditional nomadic accommodation.
guests are served a warm traditional dinner at the yurt camp. Dining under the open desert sky creates a memorable and authentic Central Asian experience.
